About Paulownia
Paulownia is a type of wood that has been used in making traditional Japanese furniture (mainly chests) for more than 200 years. Not only being light, elastic, and limber, Paulownia is also strong to aridity, humidity, fire, and worms, giving it enough reasons to be used for centuries to protect precious kimonos and properties. All of the furniture produced in this project are hand-made by the most skillful craftsmen from Kamo Chest Manufacturer's Cooperative of Niigata prefecture.

GIBA is an exhibition unit organized by young designers working in Italy and Japan.
Recently, GIBA has met the material “Paulownia” and its craftsmanship in Japan (the members' common roots), and produced a series of new Paulownia furniture. The name of the brand consisting of these items comes from the name of the material itself. Milan was chosen as the place to carry out the first presentation, considering the importance of exhibiting the charms of Paulownia to the world. |
Paulownia(桐)について
桐は200年以上も昔から、主に箪笥など日本の伝統的な家具に用いられている木材の一つです。柔軟性・弾力性に富むと同時に軽量で、湿気・乾燥・炎に強く、防虫効果も高いことから、古来より大切な着物や財産を守るために使われてきました。当プロジェクトの作品は、新潟県・加茂箪笥協同組合に加盟する優れた職人の手によるものです。

GIBA(ジバ)は、イタリアと日本を拠点とした複数の若手デザイナーによるデザイン・エキシビジョンです。
今回、GIBAはメンバー共通のルーツである日本の「桐」という素材とその加工技術に出会い、新しい桐家具のプロデュースを行いました。Paulowniaは素材の名前であり、今回のコラボレーションで生まれたアイテムを総称するブランド名です。桐の魅力を世界に見てもらうことに意味を感じ、お披露目の場としてミラノを選びました。 |
